Partnership on AI Announces Inaugural Members of its new European Steering Committee

Today, Partnership on AI, a nonprofit community of academic, civil society, and industry organizations addressing the most difficult questions on the future of AI, announced the inaugural members of its European Steering Committee, a new initiative to deepen collaboration with stakeholders in the European Union and United Kingdom.

These regions are research powerhouses and pioneered many of the early developments in responsible technology development and privacy. They include foundational institutions such as the UK’s AI Security Institute, the EU’s AI Office, and the OECD. The recently established European Steering Committee is PAI’s first regional body, and will advise on strategy, programs, and partnerships to drive forward PAI’s mission in Europe and beyond.

“There is no one-size-fits-all approach to AI governance. Of PAI’s 140 partner organizations globally, 25 have headquarters in the EU and UK. At a time when it can feel as if the world is more divided, our new European Steering Committee will continue PAI’s work of building bridges and dialogue between regions and among diverse stakeholders: from AI developers and enterprise leaders to civil society and academia. I am thankful to these leaders for coming together to form our inaugural European Steering Committee,” said Rebecca Finlay, CEO at Partnership on AI.

In addition to serving as a vital hub for connection and collaboration for UK and EU based stakeholders across sectors, the Steering Committee will explore AI research issues and substantially contribute to AI governance, including:

  • The implementation of the new EU Code of Practice and how it complements other global frameworks.
  • The development of effective accountability ecosystems across the AI value chain, including auditing, assurance mechanisms, corporate risk assessment and disclosures for investors.
  • Emerging capabilities of generative AI and agentic AI including PAI’s forthcoming AI Agents Monitoring Framework.
  • Emerging risks and opportunities related to human-AI interactions and considerations on companionship behaviours.

Inaugural members of PAI’s European Steering Committee include:

  • Joslyn Barnhart, Google DeepMind
  • Mark Brakel, Future of Life Institute
  • Jasmien César, Mastercard
  • Maarten de Rijke, Innovation Centre for Artificial Intelligence (ICAI)

I look forward to contributing to that shared effort.”
– Olga Nowicka, EU Policy & Partnerships Lead at OpenAI

“I am delighted to join the European Steering Committee of the Partnership on AI, particularly given Europe’s role in establishing frameworks for the safe and ethical development and use of AI. The PAI work is more urgent than ever: as technology reshapes our world at record speed, the questions of how AI can be implemented and used for the benefit of all, is not only academic, but determines what kind of future we will build together. Ensuring AI serves everyone while preventing forms of exploitation, repression, manipulation, and inequity, requires multi-stakeholder, international, and interdisciplinary engagement. The PAI has played a pivotal role in advancing this agenda, helping shape a safer, more inclusive AI future.”
– Claudia Roda, Professor of Computer Science, director of the MSc in Human Rights and Data Science, and the co-founder of the Working Group on Human Rights and Digital Technology at The American University of Paris

“Through PAI, we gain a seat at the table where global AI norms are shaped—critical for advising clients on cross-border compliance and risk management.”
– Peter Van Dyck, EU Policy & Head of Belgium Digital, Data, IP and Technology at A&O Shearman
